Thinking About Moving to the Sedona Verde Valley? Here’s Your Local’s Guide
If you’ve ever visited and thought, “I could live here,” you’re not alone. Here’s why so many visitors trade their vacation rental keys for house keys—and why this place feels like home to me.
Why the Sedona Verde Valley Feels Like Home
When you drive through this valley, it’s hard not to fall in love. The sunlight hits the red rocks just right, the Verde River winds quietly through the desert, and every little town has its own personality—but together, they feel like one big family.
People come here for a weekend getaway and end up planting roots. Maybe it’s the wide-open skies, the small-town charm, or the way the stars look at night. For me, it’s all of that—and the memories. My family has been here for generations, and I’ve watched this area grow while holding on to its sense of community.
So if you’re thinking of making this your home, let me give you an insider’s look at four towns: Sedona, Cottonwood, Cornville, and Camp Verde.
Sedona: Where Adventure Meets Art & Wellness
Sedona is the place everyone’s heard of—and for good reason. It’s stunning. Those red rock formations are even more magical in person than in pictures. But living here isn’t just about the views—it’s a lifestyle.
What It’s Like to Live Here
Imagine waking up and seeing hot air balloons floating in the sunrise while you sip your coffee. Your afternoons might include hiking Cathedral Rock or exploring Tlaquepaque Arts Village, then dinner at a world-class restaurant with views that make you stop mid-bite.

Cottonwood: Wine Country & Warm Welcomes
Cottonwood is where small-town hospitality meets a vibrant food and wine scene. It’s cozy, charming, and full of character. Old Town Cottonwood is like stepping into a Hallmark movie, but with better wine.
My grandfather went to school in the Clemenceau building, which now houses the local heritage museum. I just packed away his old high school letterman jacket from those days. That connection to history is something you feel when you walk these streets.
What It’s Like to Live Here
Picture strolling through Old Town on a summer night, string lights overhead, music drifting out of tasting rooms. On weekends, you can hike, float the river, or grab brunch at a local café. It’s the kind of place where people smile and say hello—and mean it.

- Outdoor Fun: Dead Horse Ranch State Park for camping, fishing, and trails.
- History: Clemenceau Heritage Museum.
Cornville: Quiet, Quirky, and Full of Heart
Cornville is the hidden gem you don’t read about in glossy magazines—but locals love it. Here, life slows down. It’s where vineyards meet pastureland, where the nights are so dark you can see every star in the sky.
A Little History (and My Story)
Cornville was supposed to be called Cohnville, after early settlers, but a clerical error changed it to Cornville. And just like that, the name stuck—a happy little accident that now defines the town.
Growing up, I rode in the junior rodeo, gymkhana with my mule loaded up in the back of my dad’s truck. The only race I ever won was “the rock on the tennis racket”—a game of balance and nerves more than speed. Back then, it felt a little silly being the only girl on a mule in a sea of horses, but looking back now, I think I was the coolest one there. Or maybe my dad was—after all, he was the one who taught those mules to load up in the back of a pickup like it was no big deal. Those are the kind of small-town memories you carry with you forever.
Local Highlights
- Wineries: Page Springs Cellars and Javelina Leap Vineyard.
- Nature: Oak Creek, bird-watching, and nights spent stargazing on your back porch.
- Food Musts: G's Burger, don't be fooled by it's location in a gas station parking lot.
Camp Verde: History, Festivals & Big Skies
Camp Verde is the gateway to the Verde Valley—a place where history and small-town fun meet wide-open ranchland. It’s where you can spend the morning kayaking, the afternoon exploring cliff dwellings, and the evening at a local festival.
What It’s Like to Live Here
If you love space, horses, and the feel of country life—but still want a grocery store nearby—Camp Verde might be your perfect match. It’s affordable, beautiful, and full of community spirit.
And don’t miss the food! Every summer, you’ll find the best sweet corn at Hauser Farms, and the town celebrates big with the Pecan & Wine Festival each spring.
Local Highlights
- History: Montezuma Castle National Monument and Fort Verde State Historic Park.
- Family Fun: Out of Africa Wildlife Park.
- Festivals: Yearly festivals like the Pecan & Wine Festival.
The Heart of the Verde Valley
Each of these towns—Sedona, Cottonwood, Cornville, Camp Verde, and Clarkdale—has its own unique personality. But here’s the magic: they’re all connected. People cross paths at the farmer’s market in Camp Verde, sip wine in Cottonwood, take in an art show in Sedona, and float the river near Cornville. That sense of togetherness, of being part of something bigger, is what makes this valley feel like one big extended family.
